REPORT ON AWACIO’S Seminar Style Workshop and Medical Screening on Cervical Cancer in Enugwu-Ukwu

Every year, August is marked as the month in which women all over the south-east of Nigeria travel from their various destinations back to their hometowns to celebrate, organize and plan the way forward of their motherhood, communities and the country at large. In accordance with this, the women of Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra State usually take advantage of the annual August meeting to organize health programs for their women. This year they made a remarkable impact in the lives of the women through a seminar style workshop and medical screening on cervical cancer.

This year’s meeting started on the 9th of August, 2016. The women from the five different Anglican Parishes in Enugwu-Ukwu gathered at the Immanuel parish, Enugwu-Ukwu to kick-off the meeting with a Holy mass. After the holy mass, Dr. Claudia Okeke, CEO of AWACIO, lectured them on the “Overview of Cervical Cancer” and the need for them to check and be examined regularly to avoid carrying the disease and not knowing. She also used the opportunity to talk to the women on the need to be faithful to their spouses and check their health status regularly. She exposed the danger of cervical cancer to the women and also gave some of them the opportunity to ask questions on issues as relates to cancer. Some staff of Federal Ministry of Defence and AWACIO commenced registration, screening and testing on cervical cancer immediately after the lecture at St Monica’s Anglican Parish.

The program ended on Friday, 12th August, 2016, with a total of 275 women screened. 10 of the women were advised to go for further check-up and pap smears, while 1 person was referred for urgent attention pertaining to recto-vaginal fistula. The remaining equipment was handed over to the leader of the Enugwu-Ukwu women and they were advised to utilize them appropriately and also give out disposable ones to avoid waste.

The women of Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State appreciated AWACIO and the Federal Ministry of Defence staff for a job well done! They also gave them some presents and gifts; they all blessed the Lord and congratulated Mrs. Beatrice in advance for her birthday. In concluding, AWACIO staff advised the leaders of the Enugwu-Ukwu women on the need to involve the younger women within the community (from 18 to 28 years) in the next public health program they put together. They also advised the women leaders to include a workshop and screening on prostate cancer for the men of their community, in order to promote healthier families.

Bead Making Training Session

On the 29th of May, 2012, AWACIO held a training conference for the widows in Bwari, Bwari Local Government Area, Abuja Nigeria. Over 100 widows gathered at the Bwari Women Center and were allowed to gain knowledge on certain skills. Trainers in the area of Bead making, Egg roll and Yam cake preparation were mobilized to teach the skills. The widows were also lectured on how to use their skills to multiply their talents, and improve their livelihood.
