The borehole installation project which was officially initiated on March 8, 2020, and began with a visit to the targeted school by AWACIO staff. The school, LEA Primary school, Dutse-Baupma was apprised of AWACIO’s intention to install a borehole sponsored by Sharzah Charity International/ UAE Embassy. The staff of LEA Primary school, Dutse-Baupma were informed that the school met the criteria for the installation of borehole which included: the existence of no borehole, and no water supply system in place. The school staff told AWACIO that their students were going to a nearby stream to drink dirty water that was also used by wandering cattles. The school’s headmistress, Mrs. Brown Ofonmbule, was officially handed an award certificate as a confirmation of the borehole installation commitment.
A Geophysical survey of the premises for the best location of borehole was done by Skybound Integrated Enterprises on March 10, 2020.
Following the survey, the site drilling began on March 17, 2020. Drilling posed a challenge since the initial detected site turned out to fail, so a second location was sought. The drilling on the second location was successful.
Following a successfully drilling of the site, the pumping machine was installed, and cemented platform for the placing of GP water tanks were constructed. The construction of the platform also required plumbing works and electrical connection of the water pump to allow the pumping of water with ease.
The project was suspended for almost two months due to the Covid19 lockdown. However, immediately after the lockdown was cancelled, the project resumed on May 26, 2020.
The final phase of construction, including tiling around the platform, GP water tanks installation and final plumbing work were concluded within the first week of June. The GP water tanks were filled with water from the borehole and the taps were tested to ensure that the borehole was functioning properly. A generator was connected directly to the Sumo pumping machine with a switch to allow water to be pumped (See picture below).
The project site was inspected by UAE Embassy staff for completion on Monday, June 8, 2020. The site was officially commissioned on Thursday, June 11, 2020. Present at the commissioning ceremony were His Excellency, deputy Ambassador of UAE to Nigeria and his staff, AWACIO CEO and her staff, the headmistress and staff of the Primary School, and some invited guest. The ceremony was successfully conducted and the pictures of the event are shown below. The headmistress, Mrs. Brown Ofonmbule, was handed the keys and the receipt of the brand new generator purchased mainly for pumping water. The school was also informed that AWACIO will be visiting from time to time, for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of the borehole, and water usage system.
