World Cervical Cancer Awareness Day Celebration
November 17 marks the cervical cancer awareness day. Aids for Women, Adolescents, and Children International Organization (AWACIO) is happy to present this prevention campaign along with the World Health Organization (WHO).
Cervical Cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the world and in Nigeria the second most frequent cause of cancer death amongst women between the ages of 15 and 44 years. It is the third most common cancer in Nigeria.
Half of the sexually active women sometimes develop a specific Human Papillomavirus (HPV),which is the main virus that causes cervical cancer in women.
Cervical cancer has taken the lives of several women and girls in Nigeria. Women and girls exposed to early activities with promiscuous men, early marriages or through rape are at risk to get cervical cancer.
The good news is that it can be prevented.
1. The most important thing to do to prevent cervical cancer is abstinence from sex outside marriage,
2. Get HPV vaccination usually from the age of 9 up to 26 years.
3. Do screening tests such as; (a) pap smear which looks for precancerous cell changes in the cervix. (b) HPV test which looks at the virus that can cause cell changes.
4. Do not smoke.
